Description

You’re bidding on an antique Japanese woodblock print – it depicts a military guard on horseback, and a horseman leading other horses probably at the head of a parade. An ancient wall, bridge, gateway and an iron fence appear in the background. The guard carry flags, including the flag of the Emperor in the center. Note that there are no seals or signatures on the piece – I believe it is probably one print that was originally part of a triptych – I have dug around to try to attribute it and have found similar themed and styled works but not an exact match. The Imperial flag suggests it is Meiji period, though, and probably pre-1900.
Note some issues of condition – mainly that it is sealed within window matting, and it also appears to be laid down to the backboard based on what I can see from the overmatting being unglued along the bottom. A little bit of foxing visible in the sky, and some mild creasing, but overall appearance is clean for age and type. The matting is also clean and well done, and could probably be recycled right into new framing. Total size is 13 3/4″ X 20″, visible area is 9 1/8″ X 13 1/2″.
Please review photos carefully to make your own determination of overall condition and appeal, and don’t hesitate to ask any questions prior to bidding – thanks for looking!
